YouTube launches nine new versions

19/06/07 - The video sharing website YouTube has launched nine international versions of its service. The new sites cover Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK.
Each new service uses the local languages and has country-specific comments and video rankings.

Chad Hurley, YouTube co-founder said: "Video is universal and allows people around the world to communicate and exchange ideas. Our mission is to entertain, inform and empower the world through video."

The site, which is owned by Google announced deals with content partners from across the globe, including France 24, AC Milan, Chelsea and Greenpeace.

YouTube is hoping to present itself as a valid platform for professional content as well as user-generated material.

Hurley said: "We respect copyright and we want to create new revenue streams to create opportunities. We have been working with rights holders to help them leverage new audiences."

There are currently numerous legal actions being taken against YouTube regarding copyright infringement of the material broadcast on the service.

BBFC to challenge Manhunt 2 release
