Webby awards winners named

02/05/07 – The winners in this year's Webby awards have been announced and they will be honoured at ceremony in New York to be held in June. The awards are now in their eleventh year and recognise "excellence in interactive design, creativity, usability and functionality on the Internet."
The awards are honouring David Bowie, for his pioneering use of the internet to interact with his fans and to promote emerging visual artists, with a Lifetime Achievement award.

The ebay community is also to receive a Lifetime Achievement award and YouTube founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley are being given the 'Webby Person of the Year' award.

There are over 100 categories with two prizes in each, the People's Choice and the Webby awards.

The People's Choice awards were voted for by the public and the Webby award winners were picked by a panel whose members included Vince Cerf, Simpsons' creator Matt Groening and the musician Beck. .

The winners were selected from the nearly 8,000 entries that came from 60 different countries.

The BBC News website was heavily rewarded winning both the Webby and People's Choice award in the news category for the third year in succession

In addition the corporation's flagship Radio station, Radio 1 won the Webby in the Radio category.

BBC News Interactive Editor Steve Herrmann was overjoyed at winning, he said: "To win both the Webby and the People's Choice awards again this year is a huge honour for us.

"It is a tribute to the range and quality of the BBC's journalism, and to the creativity and ingenuity of our journalists, developers and designers in bringing this to our online audiences in the best possible way."

Jessica Lee Rose, better known as Lonelygirl 15 on YouTube, claimed the best actress award.

Rose's posts on YouTube appeared to document the troubled life of a teenager named Bree but were later found to be staged hoaxes.

Winners at the ceremony held next month will be limited to a five word acceptance speech.

06/02/07 – Apple have reached an agreement with Apple Corps, the Beatles record label, which could see the band's songs available on iTunes. It follows a 25-year legal battle over the rights to the Apple name and logo.

BBFC to challenge Manhunt 2 release

Following the Video Appeal Committee's (VAC) decision to overturn the ban on the release of Manhunt 2 the BBFC are calling for a judicial review to block the sale of the game. The VAC ruled in favour of the game's developer, Rockstar, last week in a decision that could see the controversial title released in UK shops in the new year.

New rules for 'on-demand TV and videos'

29/05/07 - The European Commission has agreed on new rules for on-demand television video content on the internet. European ministers say that the new version of the 1989 "TV Without Frontiers" directive will allow more advertising and product placement making the audiovisual market in the EU more competitive.
