Warner Bros backs Blu-ray

Entertainment giant Warner Bros. has announced its intention to exclusively use the Blu-ray high definition DVD system for its home entertainment releases. Supporters of the Sony-created format believe that the move will lead to its victory over rival system HD DVD.
Warner Bros had previously released films on both formats but have advised that following consumer trends they are moving to Blu-ray exclusively.

The studio said that sales of titles on Blu-ray had been outselling sales of the same title on HD DVD by three to one leading to their switch.

The move has been hailed as a turning point in the battle between the two rival high definition DVD systems.

Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show Andy Parsons of the Blu-ray Disc Association, said: "It's much clearer to consumers now which of the formats is going to prevail."

However Sony are not declaring themselves victorious yet, Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony, said: "I never put up banners that say 'Mission Accomplished'."

The format war, a sequel to the battle between Betamax and VHS in the 1980s, has split Hollywood studios.

Following Warner Bros. move to Blu-ray only Universal and Paramount remain as major studios that use HD DVD for their home entertainment releases.

Currently in America films on Blu-ray are outselling HD DVD by more than two to one.

David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment encouraged the studios that currently use HD DVD to follow Warner Bros. suit and make the switch.

"We'd love to have them over and hopefully they will in the short term so we can act as a single industry," he said.
