US band claims YouTube award

28/03/07 – American rock band OK Go have claimed an award in YouTube's first annual awards. The group won the 'most creative' category for the video to their song 'Here it goes again' which featured them performing on treadmills.
There were seven categories in total and the awards are the first time videos on the site have been awarded in this way.

The usual barometer of success on YouTube is how high a video comes on the rankings for either the most-viewed or most-discussed clips.

'Thewinekone' claimed the 'best commentary' while double act Smosch won 'best comedy' for their video of a man stranded on a desert island.

Damian Kulash, OK Go's lead signer, told the AFP news agency: "It's incredible how quickly and completely YouTube is changing culture. We can't wait to get our trophy."

An award trophy will be launched at a later date and all of the award-winning videos are on a special section on YouTube.

Jamie Byrne, head of product marketing for YouTube, said: "We wanted to call out some of the most popular videos and let the users choose which ones deserve some additional recognition."

"We've seen and continue to see exciting new developments in the online video space where genres are being created," he added.
