UK Mobile internet usage soars
30/01/2007- Mobile phones were used to access the internet in the UK 15.9 million times in December 2006. The Mobile Data Association (MDA) said that this was an increase of nearly a million from November 2006.These figures mean that in the last 3 months in the UK mobile handsets have been used to browse the web 45.6 million times. The study by the MDA covered mobile internet sessions made on the O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone networks.
Thomas Husson from Jupiter Research said that the steady increase from November to December could be due to a number of new phones being given as gifts during the holiday period. He said that the use of mobile internet was "far from being mainstream".
The number of times mobile phones are used to access the web is expected to continue as the number of browser ready handsets increases and consumers' understanding of them gets better.
Nick Lane, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media also believes that the number of people using their mobile phones for internet access would continue to raise. He advised that by the end of 2007 nearly 25% of mobile subscriptions worldwide would include web browsing.
Consumers are increasingly demanding location- aware services, such as maps, through their handsets. Husson agreed that these types of services will become very important for the networks in the next 12 months.
"All the major players are starting to build services around navigation and maps, but they're still new. It's only a question of time," he said.
