UK gamers spend over a billion pounds in 2007

UK sales of video games reached their highest ever level in 2007 with a record-breaking £1.52bn worth of games being sold. That's a 25% increase on the amount spent in 2006 and does not include sales from the last two weeks the year.
78 million titles were sold in the last 12 months with many observers advising that the success of recently released hardware, such as the Nintendo Wii, had contributed to the sales.

This has led to Paul Jackson, director general of industry body ELSPA, to comment that video games had now become "truly mass market".

The recent record sales and raft of strong, award winning titles, has seen the last few years being declared as a "golden age" for the industry.

Console games now account for 79% of all software sales.
