TV giants launch YouTube rival

23/03/07 – Two of America's biggest TV networks are going to combine and show their shows on a single portal to try and stop the rise of video-sharing sites such as YouTube.
NBC Universal and Fox will allow people to see their top shows and blockbuster movies on the site.
They are launching the service in order to get greater control over how their content is provided to the public on the internet.

The service will be available through Yahoo, AOL, MSN and MySpace and will offer internet users to top shows like '24' and 'House' and hit movies like 'Borat' and 'The Devil Wears Prada'

Peter Chernin, chief operating officer of News Corporation, the parent company of Fox TV and the film studio Twentieth Century Fox, said that the new service will change the way their content was distributed on the internet.

"We will have access to just about the entire US internet audience at launch," said.

"For the first time, consumers will get what they want - professionally produced video delivered on the sites where they live," he said

Some experts do not believe that the movie will kill off or seriously damage YouTube however as many people who use the service value the social networking aspect of it.

It follows closely Viacom launching a $1bn lawsuit against YouTube for copyright infringement.

The media giant, which owns TV networks MTV and Nickelodeon, has accused YouTube of using its content illegally.

Viacom has alleged that over 160,000 unauthorised clips have been viewed more than 1.5 billion times on YouTube.

Google, which owns YouTube, has maintained that the legal rights of copyright holders have been respected on the video sharing site.
