Training for 'digital plumbers' planned

09/02/07 - The Computing Technology Industry Association is devising a training programme for those who want to be trained as digital entertainment and automation experts. People that complete the course will be able to advertise themselves as a certified Digital Home Technology Integrator.
Institutions such as the University of Central England are signing up to teach the course which will provide expertise in fitting either home automation or home cinema systems and understanding how they can work together

"There's been a market for home automation and a separate market on digital media. But there is a set of skills that bridge across the two things," said Dr Barry Henley, head of the Technology Innovation Centre at the University of Central England

Home networking or automation has increased in popularity due the cost of doing so falling coupled with more people having a large store of digital media they want available throughout their home. In the past people would've had to pay separate people to install the different elements of their home network or entertainment system.

"The worse thing about that is when something goes wrong and both blokes come in and each one blames the other. With this you have one backside to kick", said Dr Henley

The training course is intended for electricians, satellite and cable installers and home security experts with quite a few years of experience. With a properly automated home a person can control their heating by remote control and set the lights to come on when they're away to deter burglars.
