Potter book publishers to sue
19/07/07 – Legal action has been taken against two companies for publishing the final Harry Potter book early. Scholastic, the US publisher of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' has sued the online retailer DeepDiscount.com after they broke the embargo on releasing the widely anticipated novel.The publisher is also suing Deep.Discount.com's distributor Levy Entertainment after they failed to prevent the books being sent out.
In papers filled in Illinois Scholastic is claiming unspecified damages from both companies for "complete and flagrant violation of the agreements that they knew were part of the carefully constructed release of this eagerly awaited book."
Scholastic has announced that the copies sent out early only accounted for a tiny portion of it 12 million copies.
In a statement the publisher said: "The number of copies shipped is around one one-hundredth of one per cent."
The legal action was prompted by a story that appeared in The Baltimore Sun newspaper about customers receiving the book ahead of the 21 July release date.
The company that owns DeepDiscount.com, Infinity Resources, said: "We take the situation very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation."
The book's author JK Rowling has called upon fans to ignore speculation regarding the denouement of the highly popular series.
JK Rowling said on her official website: "Let's all, please, ignore the misinformation popping up on the web and in the press.
"I'd like to ask everyone who calls themselves a Harry Potter fan to help preserve the secrecy of the plot for all those who are looking forward to reading the book at the same time on publication day. In a very short time you will know everything!"
There have also been instances of the book being placed on the auction site eBay from other readers who received the book early
Earlier this week, pictures of what appeared to be pages from the new novel were circulating on the internet.
Also two photos of what appeared to be pages from the new novel have appeared on websites.
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' is officially released on 21 July.
