Posting fake reviews to be punished in court

12/02/07 - New European regulation could make positing fake reviews on internet sites like Amazon and Tripadvisor punishable in court. The claim was made by the the Times newspaper after it conducted a 'special investigation' into PR based posts on travel sites.
Firms that post 'fake' positive reviews for their products on user-generated review websites could be 'named and shamed' or prosecuted. According to the paper this is due to a European directive that will prevent firms 'falsely representing oneself as a consumer'.

The directive will become law in Britain from 31 December 2007 and is part of a European wide campaign to improve consumer rights.

The Times claimed that the directive will, "oblige businesses not to mislead consumers and also will outlaw aggressive commercial practices such as aggressive doorstep selling, bogus 'closing down' sales and pressurising parents through their children to buy products."

In December 2006 Dave Bremner posted a fake customer review of his hotel, the Drumnadrochit in Loch Ness, on Tripadvisor calling it 'outstanding and 'charming'. Bremner was not too upset by being caught and did not consider it a major transgression. “Maybe I shouldn’t have done it. But I don’t think it’s that big a deal,” he said.
