No email days a success

An American trend for workplaces to shun emails one day a week could soon become commonplace in the UK.
Intel has become the latest in a growing number of US companies to instigate a 'no email day' in an attempt to improve communication in the work place.

The processor giant has designated Fridays as the day when 150 of their engineers should abstain from using emails and talk to each other instead.

During these days workers are not banned from using email but are encouraged to make the effort to have a face to face discussion with their colleagues.

Intel took this measure following concerns raised by chief executive Paul Otellini who slammed workers "who sit two cubicles apart sending an e-mail rather than get up and talk".

They are not the only company to introduce a day where the older fashioned forms of communication are emphasised.

Deloitte and Touche and Cellular also implemented similar 'no email days' and the practice could soon be common place in Britain due to the success of the days in America.

The US firm PBD launched a no email-Friday four months ago and have reported that it has been a massive success leading to better teamwork, happier customers and quicker problem solving.

Research carried out by the Universities of Glasgow and Paisley has discovered that one third of email users get stressed by the heavy volume of e-mails they received.

The study found that employees can end up checking their inbox 30 to 40 times an hour during their working day.

Mario Hare, a lecturer at the University of Paisley, said: "There was a mismatch between how often people thought they looked at their inbox and how often they actually did it."

However some experts claim that turning off email for a day is not the answer to reducing stress and increasing productivity.

Alan Elliot, director of business development of e-mail specialists Mirapoint, advised that these days will actually increase the pressure on workers.
