New generator powered by vibrations developed.

9/07/07 – Scientists at the University of Southampton have developed a generator that is powered by natural vibrations and cold be used for heart pacemakers. It has been created as part of a project to develop a source of power for devices where it is difficult to replace batteries in them.
The scientists claim that the device is up to 10 times more efficient than other similar products.

The newly created device is less than one cubic centimetre in size and uses natural vibrationsto move a cantilever which in turn generates power.

Dr Steve Beeby, the lead researcher for the project, said: "The big advantage of wireless sensor systems is that by removing wires and batteries, there is the potential for embedding sensors in previously inaccessible locations,"

The device has been produced as part of the EU-funded Vibration Energy Scavenging (Vibes) initiative and received £14.3m euros (£9.67m) to aid the research.
