Netflix to bring Internet TV into the living room

The US DVD rental service Netflix is ready to release a wave of set-top boxes which will allow users to download programmes and movies over the internet to their home computer which can then be watched on a home television via the box. The move is an attempt to boost its appeal over its rivals namely Apple TV and the Vudu Box as well as other cable services.
The Netflix customers can benefit from this service at no extra charge, but customers will still need to use a PC to access the selection of over 6,000 titles.

Netflix has spent about $40m on the development of its streaming service during the past year and has enlisted the technology giant LG to produce their set-top boxes.

Netflix also offers a digital video streaming service which to date has seen more than 10 million film and TV titles watched.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch an online movie rental service to boost the appeal of the moderate success of its own set-top box.
