Music execs say DRM 'not fit for purpose'
16/02/07 - Removing the Digital Rights Management (DRM) locks from downloadable music would make more people buy the tracks according to a survey of music executives. Nearly two-thirds of the top players at European music firms believe that DRM prevents consumers getting what they want from digital music.62% of the music executives believed that if DRM was removed from music files, allowing them to be played on any MP3 player, the take-up of digital music would increase. In addition, nearly 54% of those questioned thought that DRM systems were currently too restrictive.
However, the study, carried out by Jupiter research, did show that music bosses did not believe DRM would not be removed in the near future despite labelling it 'not fit for purpose'. The study was carried out between December 2006 and January 2007, before Apple boss, Steve Jobs, slammed the use of DRM locks on digital music.
Analyst Mark Mulligan, one of the authors of the report, cannot see the executives changing their stance on DRM. "Despite everything that has been happening the record labels are not about to drop DRM. Even though all they
are doing is making themselves look even less compelling by using it," he said.
The study also showed that 70% of executives belied that the future of downloadable music lay in making tracks play on as many different players as possible. However 40% said it would take sustained government or consumer pressure to make this happen.
