Microsoft takes on Google

Software giant Microsoft has bought the online mapping company Multimap, one of the 10 most visited sites in the UK. Many observers believe that the purchase is an attempt to challenge Google's dominance of the search engine sector.
Multimap has 10 million users each month and Microsoft hopes the acquisition "will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business".

The amount being paid for the company that has offices in America, Australia, South Africa, Turkey and London has not been disclosed.

By purchasing the mapping service Microsoft now have a direct competitor Google's own service, Google Maps.

It is the latest move by Microsoft to boost their online presence after buying a 1.6% stake in social networking site Facebook for $240m (£117m) and purchasing US online advertising firm aQuantive for $6bn.

The software giant also currently offers services such as Virtual Earth, Live Search and Windows Live.
