Microsoft security software fails testing

05/03/2007 – The Live OneCare security software designed by Microsoft to protect Windows from malicious programs has failed tests designed to check how well it works. It was the only program to fail the tests carried out by AV Comparatives.
Live OneCare was only able to stop 82.4% of the 500,000 viruses that it was exposed to as part of the testing.

Austria-based AV Comparatives conduct this testing quarterly to determine how well the top anti-virus programs can keep up with the ever growing range of viruses.

The software is tested in its ability to spot various different types of malicious programs including, macro and script viruses, worms, backdoors and trojans.

The Microsoft software struggled against polymorphic viruses, malicious programs that regularly change their configuration.

Live OneCare was one of 17 anti-virus programs tested by the independent group and was the only one to register such a low a level of detection.

Out of the remaining 16 programs tested 14 received an advanced pass or better and two were awarded a standard rating.

Microsoft advised that they will be learning the lessons from these results and were looking to improve the software.

A spokesman for the software giant said: "We are looking closely at the methodology and results of the test to ensure that Windows Live OneCare performs better in future tests."
