Microsoft launches Vista – world holds it's breath

30/01/07 – Microsoft has launched its biggest upgrade to the Windows operating system since XP was released in 2002. Vista has been five years in development and its launch has been delayed several times.
Microsoft are relying on the joint launch of Vista and Office 2007 to help boost profits after the company saw earnings drop by 10% for the six months to December 2006.

Microsoft says that Vista will offer improved performance, better security and support more advanced 3D graphics. It is estimated that it has taken 10,000 people to develop and has cost £10bn.

The president of Microsoft International Jean-Philippe Courtois said of the operating system, "Vista is the biggest launch ever". Microsoft founder Bill gates is also playing up the importance of the new version of Windows, "For the technology industry, it's a huge milestone."

One of the key new features in Vista is the 'Aero' transparent 3D interface that allows users to see through one open window to another on their desktop.

Four home upgrade packages have been released costing £249 for the top range Ultimate to £100 for the Basic, which is designed for slower PCs and does not have features such as Aero.

Some campaigners have complained that the Vista requires too powerful a system and as a result many people may dump their old computers and buy a new Vista ready machine.
