Media giants aim for online charter

Firms including Viacom, Walt Disney, Microsoft and Myspace are working together to establish a framework of guidelines that will protect the copyrighted online content. They intend to utilise technology to stop the rights of content producers being infringed on the internet.
The owner of the video sharing site, Google, has not yet joined the group but many industry experts expect that they will do so in the future.

The issue, particularly with video content, of copyright material appearing on unauthorised websites is huge bone of contention in the online industry.

Google is currently involved in a $1bn lawsuit with Viacom over copyright breaches on YouTube.

The search engine giant has previously said that they will be implementing new technology in order to prevent copyright material appearing on YouTube.

However James McQuivey at Forrester Research believes that they will now have to change their plans. "Google will be forced to accept a common model rather than use its own solution as a competitive differentiator," he said.
