IT skills "undervalued" in the UK
A survey carried out by Microsoft has found that at a boardroom level computer skills are still undervalued by major companies. The software giant questioned 500 UK business leaders and discovered that they rated IT knowledge as the seventh most important workplace skill. The study revealed that the attributes considered the most important were team working, interpersonal skills and initiative.
However Microsoft chairman Bill Gates believes that IT skills are vital for all areas of a business.
"One of the most important changes of the last 30 years is that digital technology has transformed almost everyone into an information worker," he said.
Microsoft conducted the survey to coincide with the first anniversary of the Leitch report into overcoming the skills gap in the UK economy.
The Leitch review produced a set of recommendations to help the UK become a world leader in skills by 2020.
Another recommendation of the review was to establish a Commission for Employment & Skills in order to help meet the skills gap in the UK.
It also suggested that employers should take greater responsibility for improving skills in the workplace and carrying out employee training.
Recent studies have revealed that 6.8 million adults in the UK lack basic qualifications and the necessary numeracy, literacy and information technology skills.
The government is planning to spend £20m over three years on TV, print and poster adverts for schemes aimed at helping people overcome these deficiencies.
