Criminals shunning virus attacks

20/07/07 – Security experts have warned that hi-tech criminals are abandoning traditional methods of carrying out web-based attacks. They are now employing new tactics that are more difficult much to detect and prevent.
They now prefer to target file-sharing networks and popular web pages to attack their targets.

By employing these tactics the hackers have been able launch some of the largest attacks in history.

In the past criminals would make use of Botnets, which are computers that are remotely controlled by the attackers.

They would use these Botnets to send spam, junk e-mail and mine for information such as credit card and bank details.

However they now bombard popular file sharing networks and websites and to then attack another website, a practice that is almost undetectable.

Paul Sop, chief technology officer of security firm Prolexic told the BBC: "There's no malware on any of those computers,"
