Controversial game wins ban appeal

Rockstar, developers of the ultra violent video game Manhunt 2, have won an appeal forcing the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to review its ban on the game's release. The BBFC have twice refused to issue the title with a classification, making it impossible for the game to be put on sale in the UK.
The Video Appeals Committee rules in favour of Rockstar and if the BBFC takes no further action the game could be released for sale.

In a statement, Rockstar said: "We are committed to making great interactive entertainment, while also marketing our products responsibly and supporting an effective rating system.

"We are pleased that the decision of the VAC has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment."

The BBFC has said it is "considering the judgement" on Manhunt 2 with director David Cooke stating that the body "exercised great vigilance and care in ensuring that all violent games which are submitted to us are correctly classified".

The previous two occasions on which Manhunt 2 had been denied a certificate followed over 30 hours of playing by the BBFC testers.

Mr Cooke advised that it was the game's "focus on varied and cumulative killings" that had led to the BBFC's rulings.
