Consultancy opens up Second Life virtual office

13/02/07 - Depo consultancy have established a virtual office in the 'online world' Second Life and believe it will be the future of work. The company claim that the virtual office will eventually replace the real office and they have even hired a virtual consultant.
Marissa Meltzer was hired following an interview held in the company's Second Life office. She has been working for nearly three months and is yet to meet any of her co-workers in the flesh.

Depo claim the benefits of the virtual office include removing workers' daily commute, reducing costs for the company and improving the quality of employees' lives. It's their belief that the virtual office can replicate the real office in terms of access to computer systems, filing cabinets and management supervision.

Peter Dunkley, from depo consulting, believes the virtual office is the future, "within five years we believe that virtual offices will be established as a genuine alternative for many businesses. Within 15 years the face of work will be unrecognisable," he said.

The virtual office addresses one of the core problems of existing home-working by providing a social environment that allows workers and management to experience the benefits of team working and to develop and maintain real relationships.

Peter Dunkley agrees with this view, "Strange though it may seem, you relate to people within Second Life as people. A meeting on Second Life is as absorbing as an equivalent meeting in real life."
