Companies breach data protection guidelines

24/07/07 - The UK's Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, has criticised a number of companies, government departments and other public bodies for breaching data protection rules. Orange, Barclays and Nat West are among the organisations that have been slammed in a new report.
According to data in the study Mr Thomas had to deal with nearly 24,000 complaints about their personal data being misused during 2006 and 2007.

The government has advised that employers must take more effort in protecting staff and customer information

In addition the Ministry of Justice has advised that prison sentences may be handed out to people who maliciously abuse personal data.

The report has revealed that 56.5% of the complaints only needed advice and guidance but in 35% of cases a breach was likely to have happened.

Of those cases where a breach of data protection rules had occurred 77% resulted in remedial action.

Mr Thomas told the BBC's Today programme: "Frankly these are inexcusable. None of this is really rocket science - security is fundamental."

"We're leaving these electronic footprints right through our lives these days"

The most complained about companies were internet firms and after that banks were next with 12% of complaints about how they treated personal data.
