Blockbuster goes for Blu-ray

18/06/07 - The movie and game rental company Blockbuster is going to stock only Blu-ray high-definition DVDs at 1,450 of its US stores. It is a big blow for the rival form of next generation digital movies, HD-DVD.
Blockbuster said that the decision had been taken based on customer behaviour in the 250 stores where both formats were available where the majority favoured Blu-ray discs.

Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told the Associated Press: "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing."

Blu-ray is backed by Sony whereas HD DVD is supported by Toshiba and the two formats have been locked in a bitter battle for domination of the next generation DVD market.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group criticised Blockbuster's decision and said that the preference for Blu-ray had been caused by films such as Casino Royale and Spider Man being released exclusively on Sony's format.

Ken Graffeo, co-president of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, said: "I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying,"

Blockbuster will continue to stock films in the HD DVD format 250 of its stores and they will be available via the internet.
