Ban on new internet cafes in china for rest of this year

07/03/2006 - An order from the Chinese government has forbidden any new internet cafes from opening this year. The ban is made through a government order that has been obtained by the state news agency Xinhua.
As well as banning internet cafes, the order, issued by 14 government authorities, will also crack down on gambling through online games.

Any new internet cafes that have already been given approval must be completed by June as part of the order according to the news agency.

The Ministry of Information and Industry advises that the country currently has 113,000 internet cafes.

The ban on new cafes is part of a crackdown on internet addiction in a country where net usage increased by 30% to 132 million last year users according to figures released by the state Internet Network Information Centre.

The government has attempted to encourage people to use the internet for educational and business purposes.

Chinese President Hu Jintao ordered the internet regulators to produce a "healthy online culture" in January 2007.

China has been criticised for censoring information o the internet it considers subversive or offensive. The government has always insisted that its internet regulations are in line with the rest of the world's guidelines


This is a second time in less than a month the Live OneCare has failed testing, in February 2007 Virus Bulletin magazine revealed that the program had failed to spot all of the viruses that it tested it against.

The Microsoft spokesman did advise though that the Live OneCare software had been certified by ICSA Labs and the West Point Checkpoint system.
