Australian government cracks down on online porn

The newly elected Labor government in Australia has announced plans for tough new rules to protect children from online pornography and violence. They are hoping to bring in legislation that will force the country's internet service providers (ISPs) to filter content to ensure households and schools do not receive "inappropriate" material.
A list of websites considered unsuitable is to be drawn up and provided to the nation's ISPs.

The criteria that will be used to classify what makes the list has as yet not been discussed or revealed.

In order to receive unfiltered access the user will have to opt out of the scheme by contacting their ISP.

The plans have been criticised by civil liberties groups who seem them as unnecessary and contrary to the internet's ideals of freedom of information.

These concerns have been dismissed by telecommunications minister Stephen Conroy who argued that cutting down on child pornography was mutually exclusive to freedom of speech.

The filters the government is planning to make law could further slow down the country's connection speeds which are often below international standards.
