Apple to take on Internet Explorer

12/06/07 – Microsoft faces a challenge to the dominance of its web browser, Internet Explorer, as Apple has launched a Windows version of its web browser Safari. Apple hopes that it will be able to compete with both Microsoft's product and Mozilla's Firefox.
The decision was announced by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs who said the company was looking for a 4.9% expansion of Safari's market share.
The test version of Safari 3 for Windows XP, Vista and Apple Macs running OSX, is available for download from the Apple website.

Apple hopes it will prove as successful across multiple platforms as its music library program, iTunes, has been.

Mr Jobs said: "We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari,"
Apple also unveiled information about the forthcoming Mac operating system named Leopard.
It was revealed that it will have 300 new features, including a new system of organising the desktop called Stacks.

The new operating system is scheduled for release in the US in October and will cost $129.
An analyst for Jupiter Research, Michael Gartenberg, praised the new features on Leopard in his blog, he wrote: "Apple has once again taken their platform to the next step and given developers the framework they need. It also looks and feels really cool and perhaps that's even more important."
