America to use internet communications in space
13/04/07 – The US Department of Defense (DOD) has announced plans to develop internet communications in space. The project, named Iris, will aim to put an internet router into space at the start of 2009.Iris, Internet Router Protocol in Space, is to be funded by the DOD through its Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) programme.
In the future, the Iris project could allow the internet to expand into space with data flowing directly from satellite to satellite instead of travelling through ground stations.
Don Brown from Intelsat General, one of the companies that will develop the platform for the project, said: "Iris is to the future of satellite-based communications what Arpanet was to the creation of the internet in the 1960s,"
"The Iris architecture allows direct IP routing over satellite, eliminating the need for routing via a ground-based teleport," continued Mr Brown.
After the satellite is launched in 2009 it will allow American soldiers to communicate effectively when deployed in remote parts of the world with poor communication coverage.
Bill Shernit, CEO of Intelsat general, is certain of the project's benefit for the armed forces, he said: "Iris extends the internet into space, integrating satellite systems and the ground infrastructure for war fighters, first responders and others who need seamless and instant communications."
As well as the Iris project, JCTD also authorised funding for projects that aim to develop smart sensors and counter camouflage technology.
