21st century Domesday Book to be compiled

15/05/07 – The British Library is to create a modern day Domesday Book using emails. They hope that it will help to create a lasting freeze-frame of life in modern Britain.
Everyone in the UK is being asked to forward emails to the Library that details their life or interests.

There is also an option for people to submit a specially composed message.

All of the eligible emails that the library receives in May will be used to create an 'Email Britain' archive.

The British Library will be working in partnership with software giant Microsoft on the project.

John Tuck, British collections head at the library, said: "Email Britain will allow us to archive a vast snapshot of our present-day email communications and will be of great value for future researchers.

"Digital archiving of e-mail has never been attempted before on this scale and we're very excited to be capturing such a rich slice of contemporary life."

The email address that the messages need to be sent to is email@emailbritain.co.uk.
