1 million people sign online petition

12/02/07 - An online petition against the introduction of road pricing schemes in Britain has been signed by over a million people. The petition is a facility offered on the Downing Street website designed to encourage debate and openness and reached the million signature mark on 10 February 2007.
The road pricing scheme will introduce pay as you drive charges designed to reduce congestion on Britain's roads. The petition was set up by Peter Roberts from Worcestershire, a member of the Association of British Drivers, who believes the scheme will hit the poor and those who live away from their families the most.

Downing Street has allowed online petitions on its site for over three months and there are currently 2,800 active petitions. The transport secretary, Douglas Adams, admitted that the petition had caught the Government's attention and that they would listen to what people had to say.

"Ultimately it will be a matter for Parliament to make decisions but it is important that people have the chance to have their say and no doubt people will offer a range of opinions during the debate," he said.

More than 600 petitions submitted to the E-petition section of the Downing Street website have been rejected since the facility was launched in November 2006. Some of those rejected included petitions calling for Tony Blair to resign immediately and another calling for him to face international trial over the war in Iraq.
