Hosting Problems & Advice (Homepage & Images)

#1 by admin
This post details some of the more common problems customers encounter.

General

The web page (your homepage) you would like to load upon searching for your domain needs to be called, either....

index.html
index.htm
home.html
home.htm

If it is called something different you would need to append the file name to the end of the domain, else the Supanet holding page will display, e.g.

http://www.yourdomain.com/homepage.html

All file names are case sensitive and must not contain any spaces in them. It must be remembered that the Windows operating system is case insensitive so when you test you website on your PC at home it will work fine. Our servers use UNIX which is case sensitive and if your html code contains lower case file names but you have saved your files with uppercase file names your images etc... will not show/work.

Images

When uploading images make sure you are doing so in the Binary format. There is a button in the manage files/web space area where you can toggle between ASCII or Binary. If you don't upload using Binary your images won't work.

Once you have established that you are uploading using the Binary format but still the problem persists it may be that you are not using the correct address/path to call your image.

For example, your images may be stored in a sub directory with the rest of your images. If this is the case you will need to begin the image file call with the path e.g.

'<your directory>/<your image>'

If it's not in a sub directory you should you should not require a path before the file.

For more details we suggest some reading about about relative and absolute addressing.
